Many people dream of changing their current job and improving their lifestyle until the opportunity has passed them by, your opportunity is right Now!

My name is Kelvin White and that definitely applied to me on all three counts back in 1999.

At the time, I was working for Eddie Stobart, one of the country’s top transport firms. The job paid reasonably well and I did get to travel the UK, visiting just about every town and city.

I did quite like the trucking life style but there was a huge trade off.

During my 20 + years as a long-distance lorry driver, I was away from home and my young family for 4-5 nights every week.

My wife Sandra had the task of bringing up my two sons alone and I only got to see them at weekends. When I look back, I now realise what a huge sacrifice that was.

I missed those very precious and special moments, like the first crawl across the carpet, the first spoken words, the first steps, the school plays and the football matches.

Of course, I am not alone and during the past ten years, I have conducted hundreds of interviews with people that have similar stories to tell.

I have had the opportunity to meet a very diverse group of people, from the head of marketing and operations at one of the local BMW dealerships, the chief executive of a world-wide manufacturing company, the head teacher at a very large school and several workers from the local Argos, Morrison’s and Gerber companies.

Although this group of people may seem very different, they all have one thing in common.

They are either “owned” by their job and their employers or they lack any type of job satisfaction, recognition or long-term prospects.

Some of the people that I have met have extremely demanding jobs and the huge salaries to match but at some stage, the constant demands often place a strain on family life.

Others will find themselves in mundane jobs where they often spend 50 weeks of the year looking forward to their annual holiday and tolerate a mind numbing and often unrewarding existence.

Going to work on a Monday morning and wishing it was Friday is sadly the norm for many as life passes them by.

If I revert back to my own story and look at what finally made me take some action, it was no more than a simple ad in a newspaper, with the heading – Become a driving instructor.

I remember that exact moment to this very day but little did I know that it was about to change my entire life.

I was sat in the cab of my truck in Sheerness, Kent, 200 miles from home. It was Friday 17^th July and I remember watching two parents and their children playing in the park opposite.

My two sons were now 14 & 16 years old and as the realisation sunk in that I could never replace those special moments you share with your children as they are growing up.

I returned home on the Saturday and immediately called the ad number and made an appointment for August 25^th.

We were about to go on our annual holiday to Spain and spending quality time with my family made me realise that I could do nothing to replace those lost years but unless I took some action I could be tolerating the same sacrifices for the next 20 years.

We returned home, I attended the interview and I immediately knew this would-be life changing.

I qualified as an approved driving instructor in May 1999.

I set off to work on the Monday and for the first time in over 20 years, I knew I would be home later that day at a time of my choosing, I would be sleeping in my own bed and be with my family.

During the past 18 years, I have been able to completely control the days and times I work, I have holidays whenever I choose them without asking permission.

Each day brings enormous job satisfaction and teaching a complete novice and making them a fully qualified driver is hugely rewarding.
